7 Star Fishing Adventures

Updated on January 29, 2012

A Fishing Adventure In Sabah

Taking a fishing vacation, especially chartering a fishing boat and heading out in the open seas around Sabah is a unique adventure. One, you are on an adventure off the beaten path. Granted, a fishing expedition is not for everyone, but the call of fishing in the open seas is a call to action for anglers anywhere. Two, you get to eat freshly caught fish, prepared for you by a trained cook while you are chilling out on a boat in the middle of the south china sea, sipping a beer. Now, that's hard to beat! Three, you get to hang out with like-minded individuals who share plenty of sea stories and anecdotes about the biggest darned fish they ever caught.

Where are the choice fishing spots in Sabah? Take your pick, you can fish all around the waters of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, all the way up to Labuan. The waters around Labuan are well-known for diving and fishing. You can head off to the Manatani Islands, a group of isolated islands off the coast of Kota Belud, or fish off the coast of Kudat, the Tip of Borneo? Fancy seeing what's biting in Layang Layang?

It doesn't end there. You see, the best thing about having a boat is you can go anywhere to fish. All the way to Pulau Tiga, the survivor island from the hit television series. Ever heard of the mysterious island northwest of Kota Kinabalu, the Mengelum Island? Most of the local people in Kota Kinabalu has never heard of, let alone set foot on. But it is perfectly safe, and you can fish undisturbed in clear waters.

On Board The 7 Star

You can e-mail 7 Star Fishing Adventures, a licensed private boat registered in Sabah, Malaysia. Negotiate the price and duration of your planned fishing trip. Set the date and time you want to head out to sea, and they will pick you up from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and drive you to your hotel in the city. The shortest duration for a fishing trip out at sea is 2 days, due to the distances and time it takes to travel to the fishing site. And you can organize a trip with your fishing buddies if you want, the boat, 7 STAR can accommodate up to 10 anglers.

The 7 STAR, a fishing boat 65 feet in length by 14 feet in width. It has 10 bunks, and comes with shower facilities (no salty baths on this trip), and a functional kitchen to cook our meals. Oh, and a stocked beverage counter, which you can load up with cold beers before you head off to sea. The boat is equipped with satellite phone, GPS and sonar, which is used to find the fishes. Bring your own rod or you can rent fishing gear from them and they will provide the bait.

The captain of the boat is Captain Moktar, who everybody addresses by his first name, Captain. An experienced captain and fisherman, who knows where all the good spots for fishing are. Notice I qualified that sentence with "good spots for fishing" which is the reason why most of the anglers are here for. What is unique about this fishing adventure is the size and variety of the catch. Seriously, you can see the prove here, on every trip tired but satisfied anglers have plenty to show off and brag about.

5 things you shouldn't miss!

1. Catching the big one out in the open sea. It's man versus fish, a test of patience and strength.

2. Night fishing is a whole nice experience, the air temperature is cooler and the fishes are biting.

3. Enjoying the beautiful sunsets in between fishing, while waiting for your freshly caught huge fish to be cooked for dinner.

4. Taking time out to enjoy the open sea and the freedom to chart your own way. With the help of GPS, Sonar and radar.

5. Take lots of photographs and videos, you earn extra bragging rights for being on an open sea fishing adventure, and catching the big one.
